Flashing a shipped ROM that is not for your device, or unplugging it half way through, or having a ROM without certain essential system files in it will cause it to go to the tricolour screen with an error message, so maybe not

I didn't know that! I always assumed the tricolor screen was an artifact of the unlocking program!
