Sprint 5GB internet cap

Sprint Reigns In Data Usage

Today, 4:24 PM by Eric M. Zeman
Sprint is updating its Terms Of Service starting in mid-July and will be capping mobile broadband data usage at 5GB. Previously, Sprint offered truly unlimited mobile broadband. Once the new Terms Of Service go into effect, users who go over the 5GB cap, or a 300MB roaming cap, will be charged extra fees. AT&T Mobility and Verizon Wireless currently cap their data usage at 5GB, also.

Posted on phone scoop today.

what kind of hot garbage is that? my question is are they starting that for the people who sign up from that point on? or is that going to be affective for EVERYONE period? because i think that changes up the contract technically for those who already have an unlimited data plan..

my thoughts exactly- I've been waiting for a reason to let my parents jump ship and get on sero. get new phones too!

Success100 05-19-2008 05:28 PM

Re: Sprint 5GB internet cap

this should effectively allow anyone on an existing "unlimited data plan" to jump ship without an etf.

That is gonna cut my web-browsing by a hell of a lot. I take it that for people who use their phone as a modem it's gonna be life-changing.

Re: Sprint 5GB internet cap

If they modify the contract (which capping "unlimited" would do) then they have to waive the etf, but... since everyone caps, where would you leave to? Pay VZW or ATT more for the same cap? Or leave and sign up for Sero, if you haven't already. But, since Sprint knows that we'll experience the same cap wherever we go, they have no incentive to not cap us.

Alltel still has unlimited. atleast for the moment.

With Sprint's reputation, it would be more beneficial to keep it unlimitedto try and bring new customers on board who may be tentative about Sprint.

Not to mention I had a guy that was going to swap to sprint for his home service as soon as we got EVDO in his area because all he has now is satelite.

This sucks.

Re: Sprint 5GB internet cap

Unfortunate limited souls. Alltel unlimited on and off network. I use my 6800 for web browsing and tethering, so i need unlimited! Especially when playing HALO

alltel's speeds will never compete with sprints...ever

Wait a minute - Sero users have nothing to worry about?

If that's the case, I should be good too.

im not 100 percent sure on this but i doubt that it does affect data cards, because that would SERIOUSLY limit one's browsing.. think of the people who use their laptops for work and such... it just wouldnt make since, but then again.. who knows with sprint

Its not great but its not alot of money if you arent working the employee discount, its good in the phoenix area. I havent been anywhere I cant get a signal or check my email, or use GPS, so thats all I really need. Now I did have Alltel, they have more cell towers here in Phoenix than just about anywhere, they have 3 times as many as verizon, At&T and Sprint.

Don't know where anyone got the Sero's not affected. Can someone point out that exemption?

lol, idk about sero plans.. but i know that 3rd party employee plans should be fine, why would they fine their own employees? should be one of the perks of working there IMO. but sero technically isnt an employee plan.. so idk

shaggylive 05-19-2008 06:21 PM

Re: Sprint 5GB internet cap

yea the employee plan is different from sero, the employee plan has always had unlimited data b/c they want it used as a sales tool.

Re: Sprint 5GB internet cap

so is this just for browsing or all data services, example, i pay for sprint tv subscriptions now i have to pay when i use that too much? im already payin for the service, second, im on a plan with 3 phones, all unlim data, we share minutes, do we share the 5gig cap too? this is real s#!tty if that is the case

It's interesting timing considering Sprint's intention to offer MMS in the near future.

late,

Re: Sprint 5GB internet cap

This appears to be going against the new "Simply Everything" plan Sprint is propaganding around.. "Unlimited email" "Web Browsing" etc... how could they institute this new policy with that plan?

A cap on ANYTHING on a plan is not "Unlimited" so let's see what Sprint has to say about this..

Limegrntaln 05-19-2008 06:46 PM

Re: Sprint 5GB internet cap

Its the newer "Well its almost unlimited plan" and we are going to charge you for switching to it, cause you dont have a choice and while we are at we are going to automatically bump your contract back to 2 years. Welcome to Sprint. Your friend in the Digital age.

I just got signed up for a couple of 2-year SERO plans- nice to know my commitments will be null and void in a couple months.

Cellphone Free Agency, here I come (again)...

Re: Sprint 5GB internet cap

I wana see official documentation. Everything I've see has been for data plans and pam not traditional vision. So Sprint TV and surfing from the phone looks to be fine, for now. But this comes from forums and third hand. I stream to my phone all the time and go over 5 gigs every month. This will be a p*sser if it applies to Sero vision.

shaggylive 05-19-2008 07:00 PM

Re: Sprint 5GB internet cap

ok, I just got off the phone with a soon to be district manager for a major sprint 3rd party. he claims this is all b/s and Dan the man said so.

No1ustad 05-19-2008 07:01 PM

Re: Sprint 5GB internet cap

so if we have the $15.00 internet add-on, we'll have the opportunity to drop our whole contract with out the etf?

Re: Sprint 5GB internet cap

How much data your guys use on an average month?I use abt 5gb every month since i was w/Sprint 2 years ago.

marcus_cruz 05-19-2008 07:10 PM

Re: Sprint 5GB internet cap

They cant do that. As all of us will eventually hit the cap. It would be more reasonable if they set it per billing cycle like people who dont have the 99 unlimited plan get billed for extra minutes. I have 3 sprint phones, 3 numbers and data on all three, so do I get 15 gigs or 5 shared amongst all three phones ? I think theyre trying to get the people that are using third party programs to do they're phone as modem. thats going to be a maintenance nightmare on their end if they only want to count towards the cap for non-vision services. I also think that people that are already on the unlimited plan should be grandfathered in, and only new accounts should have the 5 gig restriction.

Re: Sprint 5GB internet cap

well I just got off the phone with a rep...at first she had no clue..and need to talk to her sup..after a few questions.....since I been with sprint over 10 yrs with the same contract...it been good to me....and a loyal cust.....I would not be affected.

BUT...I will wait and see about that.....to good to be true...LOL.

dkincaid 05-19-2008 07:16 PM

Re: Sprint 5GB internet cap

I think it's safe to say they aren't going to be sending out letters to everyone who hits 5GB a month. That is a tremendous amount of data and very few people are going to go over. Even then, they are going to save the letters for people who are clearly abusing it.

I think everyone is getting a little excited for no reason.

Re: Sprint 5GB internet cap

I don't think I'll have any problem. I don't tether too much.

Think about it guys, 5GB. Most sites are about 3-5MB on average (MINUS sites that have flash content, excessive pictures, etc)

Plus, nowadays, alot of sites have mobile versions.

Possible issues for most people: streaming content - i.e. Orb, dashwire, slingbox, youtube...

Re: Sprint 5GB internet cap

I am newer to this....where/how do I find out how much usage towards 5GB I have used?

[sammich] 05-19-2008 07:47 PM

Re: Sprint 5GB internet cap

You could use a program called phoneAlarm at pocketmax.net

It has an option to track data usage.

dschoenike 05-19-2008 07:54 PM

Re: Sprint 5GB internet cap

Maybe i read it wrong, but engadget mobiles' story on this issue seems to imply that it only affects data card usage. If thats the case, the change wouldnt apply to our phones right?
