If you're sending/receiving messages, it's going to incur a sent/received message... unless you use Google Voice, and the message is never actually processed by your carrier (or there's some other way to prevent texts from actually hitting the phone?)

I've never tried it but it seems like if you used an app like tikl it would avoid incurring the fee like GV, or am I just talking out of my ass?

Yea, like I said if you had some app that could basically ensure the message was never processed by your carrier, then you won't incur any charges.

To my knowledge, Google Voice would be the only way to do that. Unless there's another app that requires data usage only, and somehow 'catches' messages before they reach the carrier? I don't see how that's possible. The reason Google Voice works at circumventing the carrier is you give people a completely different phone number - so the message is never actually sent to your carrier...

The built-in messaging app always uses mobile data for MMS. Most carriers require this, because they're too lazy to do proper authentication. They accept any incoming MMS that's transmitted on their own network.

Thanks arrrghhh & highlandsun, I was just wondering because my wife only runs WM so I need to find something compatible, I'll check a few different app options and update my findings.
