How good is Android on TP2?
Hey guys,
I got a new TP2 from warranty today - and it's pristine, no scratches, and since it works, I am going to add Android, I think. What all is functional on it? What version of Android will it be? Can I leave it in Android Mode permanently? Thanks. Jeremy |
Re: How good is Android on TP2?
Go for it and never look back! WM is DEAD. I have used XDAndroid on my phone exclusively for about a month now. I havent tried Bluetooth yet, but everything else works great on mine. I don't have any real complaints. The Market works just fine so you now have access to "new" programs. I overclock a little bit and have made some speed adjustments and it is pretty snappy. Some programs I have didnt work and I am not sure why, but it its probably hardware related. I wouldnt be scared at all. Cant get Slingplayer to work though, which is my only reason for going back to WM...

Re: How good is Android on TP2?
I have browsed and found several tutorials and/or videos on installing that on the TP2. Is one better than the other?
What version of Android comes with this install? 1.5? 2.1? 2.2? So, what I am reading - you can pretty much run your phone in Android all the time, and make calls/do everything? I thought that I had read that initially, sound wasn't working on it.but, you've made it work? Do you leave yours in Android all the time? Jeremy |

As for builds, FroYo is the most stable (2.2): http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/android-tp...e-release.html GingerBread (2.3) is pretty snappy, but it still has some issues that FroYo doesn't have: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/android-tp...ha-camera.html Most things work, and this is a good thread that goes thru what works and what doesn't (and how to fix it if possible:) http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/android-tp...ted-frx07.html Give it a shot! You've got nothing to lose but a little bit of time. |
Re: How good is Android on TP2?
Ok - I read where the program has to be installed to the "root of the SD card." I don't have a memory card adapter, and I have my TP2 set to "file sharing" in Windows Mobile - how do I find the SD card so I can install this program to it?
Thanks. |
Re: How good is Android on TP2?
Never mind - I figured it out.

Re: How good is Android on TP2?
Which Rhodium is the Touch Pro 2 Sprint? I see 5 choices.

Re: How good is Android on TP2?
RHOD400 is the Sprint model.

Re: How good is Android on TP2?
Thanks all of you for your help.
It's cool having Android on my phone. Question - on this phone, i have contacts that I don't have anywhere else. I have a gmail account that most of my contacts are in, but, not all of them. I nkow I can sync this droid software with my gmail and get the contacts from that account, but, is there a way that I can co-sync them? Is there a risk of syncing with Google on the android side and losing my contacts on the phone side? Thanks. Jeremy |

Re: How good is Android on TP2?
Hey, thanks for that!
I have noticed today - my battery life seems to be a tad poorer (well, quite a bit, really) than normal, and voice quality on calls is has some background noise/static. Is there a fix for that? Thanks. Jeremy |
Re: How good is Android on TP2?
Your battery life will be worse in android due to all the programs using resources to sync and the use of GPS on a semi constant basis. There are tweaks to be done on the individual appliction side or you can disable the GPS location in the settings and that will save you some life. Personally, I just leave all this stuff on and keep a charger close by, like in the car and at work. Worth it in my opinion to have the functionality of the apps. You can also back off on the sync times with your email and stuff to save some energy.

Thanks.
What about sound quality? |
Re: How good is Android on TP2?
Got it fixed - the speakerphone was on - it's crystal clear now.

Re: How good is Android on TP2?
I've been running less than a week and here is what I've observed.
1. Stability is as good as or better than WinMo. Not that I had WinMo reboot on me it would just slow down after a few days. I don't see that slow down with Android. I don't get reboots after letting everything settle. 2. Marketplace works fine. I've gotten one app that would not work on the TP2 (lacking a compass), but everything else has been fine. 3. Needs polish, a couple examples. a. Was using the Navigator app, got a phone call and all during the phone call the navigator app kept talking in my ear. It should have been muted. b. When the phone call is done, my screen has turned off, so I have to hit the power button to bring it back up, unlock, hit the phone key, then I can hang up. Never had to do 3-4 things just to hang up a phone before. Should have a phone app up when the call is done so I can hang up. 4. Still need WinMo to set somethings up to get them to work, so I don't know how a NAND flash would work. Overall I like it and will continue using it, but I dual boot to have flexibility to go back into WinMo for "full" phone feature support. dave |
Re: How good is Android on TP2?
I am looking for speed & stability in my android. I haven't got it so far. Any suggestions on this front. I remember to have an old build working an year ago but now it says some apps expired whenever I switch it on. Please suggest me the fastest build of tweaks to do the same. Thanks
|
Re: How good is Android on TP2?
Try this thread for some speed tweaks. I am using a couple of them and havent had any different stability issues. I would agree that the Froyo 7.1 is about as stable as Winmo, and you have the ability to use the Market to get newly developed apps. Wont get that from anywhere in Windows right now for our phones. The onlyproblem I have had is that it may random reboot about once a week. Other than that it is good to go. If you have the .apk to your old programs, just put them in the Android App folder that comes with the bundle and you should be good. Might have to use a Astro or some other file manager to get there to install. Like I said before,I have a couple of programs that just dont work, but I dont know why and I cant really blame on Android. Everything has been working beyond my expectations for at least a couple of weeks.

As for sakshamkatyal is saying... Our phones aren't made for Android. Consider yourself lucky that it works as well as it does. The developers have worked hard for nearly two years to get it where it is today. The Rhodium is from 2009, but it has processor and RAM specs from 2007 - so I consider myself very fortunate that the damned thing can run Android at all! |
Re: How good is Android on TP2?
For sure - I remember reading when they couldn't get audio to work on it, so, I am very happy about this.
Also, I am now runnig Advanced Task Killer - and that I think will help me keep the battery from dying. Jeremy |

Re: How good is Android on TP2?
hey guys this is my first post.8)
firstly i want to mention how i have been reading many older posts and i want to thank all who have been involved in helping me get android on my tp2 from sprint. i want to thank arrggghh in particular because i was able to follow his directions to get up and running. i used the frx07.1 being that i just today got the android going i am having a problem getting the wifi to work. it starts to turn on but then it either shuts itself off or says unable to scan. also, just curious what the difference is between the rhod400 and 500 since i saw someone said sprint is the 400 but i have sprint and it says rhod500 under the batt. i am using 500 as my startup but i wonder if that could be a cause of the problems. i actually just spotted a dif thread about frx07 fixes and i will peek there but any help would be appreciated. thanks alot |

As for the wifi issue, you might want to take a peek @ the FAQ. There's a caveat there if wifi never works, no matter what you try. Assuming you grabbed the FRX07.1 bundle and didn't change anything, wifi *should* "just work". If it doesn't, you might have to do the wifi-nvram trick. The issue boils down to Android not detecting your MAC address. |
Re: How good is Android on TP2?
sounds good, the FAQ also says about updating kernels, is that something that should be done before the nvram trick?
i also forgot to mention a minor detail of incoming calls not working...outgoing works web works sms works, only incoming rings and then goes to vm. i am just t=staying in winmo until i work out these kinks |
Re: How good is Android on TP2?

As for incoming calls, no clue. They work great for me. What radio firmware is your phone on? Do you use an Airave? |
Re: How good is Android on TP2?
I am not using an airave and I am not sure how to get my radio firmware info
I didn't set up the voicemail number in the call setting of android yet if that makes any difference |
Re: How good is Android on TP2?

To get the radio version in Android, go to Settings -> About Phone -> Baseband Version. The stuff after the underscore is the radio version. For example, I'm on 2.37.00WV |
Re: How good is Android on TP2?
2.3200wf

Re: How good is Android on TP2?
Stock 6.5
Ce os 5.2.21889 build 21889 5.0.87 I didnt change anything in winmo as I got this phone recently for the sole purpose of getting android on it. I'm on an old plan with data and this is the best phone without paying triple the price I just went into airplane mode before booting and I can now get incoming calls!! Thanks again I'm going to have to try the Wifi nvram trick tomorrow since it would be nice to have wifi. |
Re: How good is Android on TP2?
Airplane mode before boot did the trick!
Would love to get wifi working so have to try the nvram tomorrow thanks |

Re: How good is Android on TP2?
I am new to this and recently rooted my TP2 for the first time to enerygy rom. now i want to go for android. from what i read, its installed on SD card and does not affect the phone. so, if i screw up something and if it dosent work, can i just remove the SD card and use my energy rom? or will I have to re-install energy again?
