new kernel, OC to 710 and installed swapper2 (used to for making SD cache---possible degradation to SD) but this thing is so quick now it's insane.

Make sure you go to the advanced settings under swapper 2 to force it to delete the swapfile every time you boot into android; this will force the swapfile to be recreated in a different area of the SD card so that wearleveling is used, preventing degradation to the same SD card location used by the swapfile. If you have a big swapfile (like 128mb), it will take a while to boot as it will delete the old swapfile and create the new one.

EDIT: recently bought a couple 2GB cards for $5!!! So I'm testing it on one of them and leave my 8GB alone... don't want to damage my good 8GB card.

A tad bit OT but let us know how swapper works on these build and if you're seeing any issues w/ sd cards after using it for a bit.

Oops, sorry about being OT; probably should create another thread for it (cons/pros of using it).

Edit: hey, ffkip911, maybe you go ahead and start a thread about swapper 2 and I'll contribute; you should do it because you're always on top of testing these new features

Edit: I remembered arrrghhh saying not to use swapfile; most likely because it's bad for your SD card, but if you have a card to spare, I guess who knows what pros we can find out about swapper 2. If you're using swapper 2, I recommend you restart Android often so that it will create a new swapfile at another location on your SD card so that your card will wear "evenly" (wearleveling).

not really off topic...seeing as the reason to use swapper2 was to verify whether low free mem is the root cause of the crashes---I do see where you are coming from though....check how smooth boot animation is with swapper installed.

Re: [TESTING] Updated 3/11/11 New Kernel - TONS of changes!!

after kicking off FB WIDGET----zero locks or freezes on the new kernel. I'm OC to 710 and using swapper2. holly crap. Arrrrgh, I suggest getting the info from NDNO on how to install and set up the app. this is a must have in my book. maybe not for the EVO people, but for those of us on TP2 with very little free mem available. the more you use it, the more it cache's

currently my settings are

Vin titanium, PP 14

advanced config (winmo) glyph cache 32mb, filter cache 4049
NO OC in winmo

OC android to 710 through startup.txt

Swap place: /sdcard/FRX05/swapfile.swp
Swap size : 128MB
Swappiness : 60(system default)

I'm probably 2/3 speed of the EVO now...steady as a damn rock. I think the issue is the FB Widget....if you don't put that on---you're golden

swap size may be a bit big at 128---96 seems more reasonable for speed

I wasn't saying you guys were off topic, my request was what was OT, for info on how it worked as far as swapping the data. Although I agree w/ you too, if this stops some of the SOD/Failed wakes, it's relative here lol. I'm still using the FB icon, not sure if that's what you're referring to on merely the widget that's possibly causing the issues as I'm not using the widget, only a shortcut to the app.

Oops, sorry Fish, misunderstood you. I agree, the widget may have caused restarts/resets (not sure about SODs though). When I was using the SetCpu widget on the home screen, it was constantly causing resets; I took it off (it's still running in the background) and no more resets; a shortcut to it is fine on my home screen. The FB widget itself must be causing the reset instability, not the FB app (so a shortcut is OK). Maybe certain widgets don't play nice with the home launcher. ffkip911, what launcher are you using? I know Fish uses ADW, I'm using Zeam.

fish----ahhhh, gotcha. NDNO is the man, he got me up an running on it.

Now here's a question, spinning hard drives can become "etched" also, when data is stored, the spinning disk sometimes needs to be defraged-----however, i was under the impression that flash has no such drawbacks because there is nothing physically moving. so how could pushing and pulling data from one section wear it out??

I just remember reading in one of the threads here about constantly reformatting the sd card because there is only so many read/write cycles that a sd card can handle and that constant reading/writing to the card can cause it to prematurely die, but I'm not an expert by any means on this. Maybe arrrghhh or one of the dev's could give more info on this. I believe it was Nate who was talking about it, but don't quote me on that.

When I bought my sdcard from newegg it mentioned there being a limit (Durability: 10,000 insertion/removal cycles) to the read/write cycles... Thats why im hesitant on reformating my sdcard all the time.

Im curious though if its every time I copy a file its considered one write cycle. or is it if I copyied 10 files at once thats considered one write cycle.

It cost me like 60$ its a transcend 16gb class 6.

fish is right, all current flash memory, there's a limited # of read/write they can perform before they simply wear out. think of it as number of time you can turn on a lightbulb before it burn out, even though no moving part, they can still eventually wear out, depending on the flash memory, I think the design life is typically over 10k write cycle though.
