Great News... Gmail is now a market app and can be updated independently of the O/S.

Thanks, i saw this on phonedog earlier from work, big downer is that it only supports Android 2.2... I'm sure a hacking community or so will change that soon though, well I hope

None other than IMAP. I got tired of it and the default email program notifying me of the same email. I disabled notifications from the GMail application, took it off the home screen and set GMail up in the default email application. Much easier and no duplicate notifications and more options also.

First, gmail was a part of the O/S, so while gmail is constantly improving, you could only get the latest release as a part of a package from your carrier/device maker.

With it being in the market, you can upgrade gmail independently of the software on your phone.

If one is rooted, would deleting the one in the system folder and replacing it with the new one - is that a viable alternative?
