Google Maps Navigation

So, I had my first chance at really trying this out this weekend on my Nexus One.

I drove from my house to downtown Chicago and back. Google Maps calculated the route as taking about an hour and 15 minutes. Going there, it said, based on traffic, that it would take about an hour and 25 minutes. This was pretty accurate because the traffic was really light.

TTS worked good, but sometimes it seemed like it talked too much. On one exit, it repeated itself 3 times as I was on the ramp merging onto another interstate. This was pretty annoying, especially because it wouldn't just say "Merge Onto I290 Westbound", it added alot more to the description and basically read the entire exit sign to me, but 3 times!!!

On the way home, while downtown, I was stopped at a light and for some reason it thought I already turned because it already loaded up my next turn, even though I wasn't on State Street yet. This could have been a GPS accuracy issue though, not necessarily an app issue.

The traffic was a little off. On the way home it said it should take an hour and 40 minutes...I think it took about an hour and 50. It didn't route me around the traffic since it wasn't TOO bad, but when Google Maps showed it as being green, it still should have been red or yellow because we were stopped or barely moving. I think this is true of any GPS system that tries to get traffic though. Its not up to the minute, so sometimes its not very accurate.

I had full 3G service the whole way, so I'm not sure how well it would have worked on Edge.

Overall, I think its a great program and especially for free. I like the online features it offers compared to a downloadable navigation app, but I also like having the offline maps too in case I lose cell service.

Re: Google Maps Navigation

I like using it (mainly because on Fresh 2.0d, Sprint Nav is uninstalled). I just speak into the phone, and say "navigate to...", and while it takes a little longer than I would like, it fires up the navigation program, and starts telling me where to go. It hasn't let me down yet.

Re: Google Maps Navigation

I have tried it, and it is a very cool app. My cars navigation seemed to be a tad faster, but for it being on my phone I was impressed. Will I use it again? Probably not, but if I need it I know it will do the job.

Re: Google Maps Navigation

Does it have a pedestrian option? I love that option on Sprint Navigation. I use it alot in NYC I have a terrible sense of direction so I use it when I leave the subway w/o I usually walk in the direction.

I take it you mean "by foot"? If so, then yes, it has that option.

Re: Google Maps Navigation

Yes, it has pedestrian mode and they also just added bike routes and I think they did something with public transportation too.

Re: Google Maps Navigation

Couple of questions regarding this APP:

1. How can I make the voice louder? the installed SPRINT NAVIGATION is MUCH louder out of the EVO speaker then GOOGLE NAVIGATION

2. How is this program calculating the rout? My Garmin has choices for FASTEST or SHORTEST and also takes into account traffic. Which way is it calculating?

3. How do you see POI on the maps? I was using the SAT MAP. A

4. My Garmin will announce Traffic - IE "slow traffic in one mine" or "Accident in 2 miles" .. is there a way to do that? I only saw a way to turn on a layer for traffic but the icons for the traffic were very small and I couldnt see them and it didnt notify me of what was coming up. I actually got STUCK on ROAD CONSTRUCTION that my Garmin notified me about and asked if I wanted to re-route around it.

5. HOW to I get the CAR MODE? its supposed to have a car mode when it is in a car cradle. I put my EVO in the car cradle and the option for which CAR UI I wanted came up but nothing for GOOGLE NAVIGATION.

Thanks...
