I think I did the same thing as you originally. I kept getting connection error also. I was able to get an active sync connection but then when I tried to run the unlocker it would disconnect the connection and it would bring up the error message. I don't remember what I had to do exactly to get it to work but try doing a soft reset then go the bootloader mode before the rom loads up or soft reset let the rom load then a connect via active sync and try to re-run the unlocker
