Sounds like your card is one of those early 4GB 'sort of fake' cards that are non-HC, and are therefore non-compliant with both the non-HC and the HC specifications.

With all due respect, you should just 'bite the bullet' and throw away that card, as it'll give you nothing but headaches as long as you try to use it.
