Radios ironically don't have terribly much to do with signal strength. Upgrading your radio won't hurt (in fact, it will help slightly in a number of ways), but it won't give you a noticeable bump of signal strength.

Your best bet is to update your PRL (public roaming list). Dial *228 and follow the directions to get the latest one.
