I have been around various electronics all my life and have either personally fried or been around enough stuff fried by other people to recognize that all-to-familiar smell of fried semiconductors. The first time I flashed my ROM, I got just a hint of that smell, though the ROM update was successful. Call me paranoid, but I now take the battery out of my PPC for several hours and let my it go stone cold before flashing it. I've also been known to point a fan at it when one is readily available during flashing.
In my opinion, when it comes to flashing my advice would be to read the back of a can. "Store in a clean cool dry area until use."
Hopefully this post, along with the others will help keep someone from frying their Apache.
My last thought is that you'd be foolish to try this stuff without some form of handset insurance. But that's just my opinion, take it for what its worth.
