Apparently even VZW likes to give misinformation on this. From what I can tell and others have verified, the ONLY difference between the plans is that the more expensive one includes Verizon's own wireless sync. apparently they can do a type of push email even with non activesync accounts. Both plans seem to allow activesync (with exchange and google). I've seen no problem with either and others bear this out.
I think it's mearly marketing to try and push the more expensive plan.
