Htc Titan stuck in bootloader

First of all, this phone was running an official rom, and had not been altered in any way from true factory condition. I had just gotten it, and in an attempt to determine which installed programs were bundled crapware, I decided to hard-reset the phone. I held in both soft buttons, and hit the stylus reset button. The prompt to press R to reset came up, so i pressed R. I waited for it to finish, and when it reset, it went straight into the bootloader. (Yes the actual bootloader with the colored bars).

I tried to restart the phone via the power button, via the reset button, by running the hard reset procedure again, by removing the battery, etc. No matter what, it kept re-entering the bootloader.

So I decided to try installing the latest official Alltel ROM. The RUU process went fine, and when finished the phone reboot, back into the bootloader. (The RUU did result in the bootloader getting upgraded, and I'm betting the rom installed fine, too).

I've run the Titan Exit Bootloader program found on these forums but it did not help. It caused the phone to restart, but it did not leave the bootloader.

Anybody know what is going on?
