Thats the problem if your flashing a radio that is not for your provider. Like a telus radio in a sprint pro. The phone needs to be unlocked like you would to be able to flash a custom rom.
If the RUU is the right one it wont clear your memory. There is different RUU folders to flash roms(will erase data) and radios or bootscreens Im assuming(wont erase data) In general you never know though. Always a good idea to back things up.
