The only reason I know all of that is that long ago, while I was a noob, I flashed a rom that had an extended rom, and it ran, and when I dialed *228, nothing happened, but when I dialed *2, a sprint rep answered
So, I figured out how to do it, and all was good. Hope it gets you going.
