Google's stuff usually "just works", and I was surprised that I hit any snags at all. I feel like I must be missing something obvious!

GMail does just work, just add it as a mail account in your mail settings and it will autodetect the settings as a gmail account, no GMail app is needed. It may also need POP enabled on your Gmail account, I am not sure because I always have it enabled.
