This happens to me as well. The mail application doesn't actually quit, though. You just need to give it some time to sync. I pretty much expect it to crash back to the main TF3D screen each time I check my mail (Yahoo, Gmail, or school e-mail), but I just give it a few more seconds and the messages start coming through.
