when you upgraded, did you have to use epst to recover you ESN or anything, or did it just go smooth for you? I'm going to be transitioning from an older pda to the 6800, and I believe I had seen in quite a few places that upgrading before doing the ESN switch saves you the grief of akey and data issues becuase the *228 sets it all to right when coming from a different phone..

Just like with my 6900, I hesitant to make that first flash only because I've read quite a few horror stories, but most of them are older from what I can see and I don't think apply to MR1 update. It's my understanding, as you stated here, that just unlocking the phone with the 2.47 bootloader is all I have to do before flashing the first custom rom.
