To get the registry dump you can use a registry tool like PHM regedit or Resco's utility. It may not be needed, but a nice to have. As for the rom dump it's kinda advanced and may not be needed, but there are tools to do that on the xda-developer's forum.
The contacts can be saved via activesync. Either to a PC with outlook or to mail2web. There is a nice thread with a howto on mail2web settings for free push email (it will also hold contacts and tasks etc.)
Programs like spb backup will not help you much if you are trying to upgrade to a new AKU such as 3.5 because the old settings/files are not compatible (pim.vol for one - contacts).
I'm sure you realize this is a hack so there won't be a guarantee that it will work, but it should and it would definitely be cool if it does! The best fallback would be to get the rom install file from the person that you had flash it, but it sounds to be a well kept secret file.
