The software on the phone is causing the light to turn on every time it checks for a data connection. I don't know if there is someway to turn this off, but if it is really annoying change your backlight timer.

I use a program called phonealarm in which I am able to set my phone to different settings at different times during the day.

In phone alarm, you are able to change your display to turn off after a certain amount of time when the phone is not being used.

Example: When I am home during the days and sleeping, I have all alarms silent and the backlight display set to 10 secs.

Don't know if this helps,
phonealarm also resolved this issue for me back on AKU 2.x
since moving to AKU 3.x i no longer suffer this problem w/ or w/out phonealarm.

and man... did it piss me off to, especially on long trips at night the phone would turn on constantly and i kept looking at it waiting for the "ring" or SMS alert to go off before getting annoyed and hitting the power button, only to have it light back up a few minutes later. GRRR
