Long Messages Truncated: Preceding msg modified, Media objects removed

When somebody on verizon with a dumbphone sends me a text, I get the first 160 characters, and then "preceding msg modified, media objects removed" as a second message.
Now, interestingly, my phone is cloned, and appears to verizon to be a v3m, which is entirely compatible with verizon's extended messaging service. I have the palm threaded app installed, too, but I don't think this makes a difference.
Anyway, the point is, somehow, the sms server is detecting what my phone really is, and is truncating my message appropriately. Or, it's being done by my handset itself.
So I'm curious if all of you with non-cloned phones get this same error when somebody sends you a text longer than 160 characters.
