Each phone has a serial number (ESN) that allows it to be on the database of the carrier. If you can work it out with VZW, then it is OK. Decide on your carrier first and activate the phone while still WM5. Lots less questions from the carrier as the WM6/6.1 is not supported on the phone. Once you upgrade the ROM, you will probably lose tech support from the carrier. But the support on the board is better than any carrier's tech support. Get the insurance, too, if you can. Look at some of the issues with the phone on the board.
Edit: Oh, that app gets you unstuck from the bootloader screen ("black screen") after a problematic flash but I guess you aren't stuck. Again, if you are using Vista with the 1.00 bootloader, you will have problems using the kitchen.
