If you use PIMBackup http://www.dotfred.net/PIM/PPCPimBackupV2.8_wm2005.zip you should be able to keep contacts, emails, sms, call log etc. You will need to reinstall all apps. Hope this helps you decide to take the plunge. Once you have upgraded and installed all apps, make a complete backup of your device with SPB backup or another commercial program. Then you can test any of the newer roms, but be able to reflash to the older working rom if need be without reinstalling all the apps again. Helps when testing cutting edge roms that are still a little flakey.
