I feel that I have a pretty nice (non-contractual) setup going on... but it's still more expensive than your "oh crap" price-point... I've just held onto an older plan...
I guess I just find it funny that people are frothing at the mouth of a phone that will probably cost them $400-600 cash, and yet a $60 monthly bill would be outrageous to them... Most of the people on the SERO plans, on the forums, typically upgrade their phones more than once per year on top of that...
amusing to me... but to each their own, I suppose.

SERO= Sprint Employee Referral Offer, so no you don't have to be a Sprint employee or even direct family. You can be referred by a Sprint employee. Some people aren't, but there are those of us who were, and yes we do like our plans. Also, stereotyping all of us into the group (that includes very few really) that upgrades their phone every few months isn't cool either.
On another note, I will be upgrading to a touch pro (after OVER a year with my current device) when it is released.
