Yes, undo all the crap you did and start over. Garmin's XT software gets traffic by default, all you need to do is go to settings(in XT) and disable traffic, then it won't try to connect.
Sorry, I can't seem to follow your above story. And you may want to d/l the XT users manual it is full of very useful things.
