That sucks more battery than any thing else. Plus, if you use it that way all the time, your eyes get used to it being real bright. I've found it best to use the lowest possible backlight setting for ambient conditions, and then crank it up when in direct sunlight, by having a link I can get to without having to see the screen in order to brighten it up. I'd like to make the right (red) hardware press and hold take me to Windows\Backlight.exe, but have settled for now with using the right soft button, thanks to KeySwop. After that, navigation right ups backlight.

Of course, stepping into the shade or creating your own shade by bending over and holding Touch in your own shadow while using a hand as visor can help too.
