Jailbroken = Rooted (same thing)
Jailbreaking usually refers to iPhones, were as on a Android device, you're technically trying to gain "root" access so it's normally called "rooting".
The fact that Sprint told you it was "jailbroken" should give you create comfort in knowing that you have a great community on here to help you w/ your phone because most (not all) Sprint employees are clueless.
It's kind of like taking your PC to a PC repair shop because your wifi isn't working and the tech tells you that he can fix it for you and you'll be back on the
internets watching the
youtube in no time.
Yes, those words are associated w/ PC technology, but the fact that they misuse them, wouldn't give you much confidence in their ability to fix you pc.
