No thats not the issue..you would not be able to see the connection AT ALL if you don't have N..BUT this has reminded me something..on one of my laptops I had to Enable AdHoc N via the Adapter Driver settings for it to work...

You can also try the new Android-Wifi-Tether 3.0 if you havent..as its Infrastructure..
