Yes, your going to need software. No root necessary for certain software.

I use PDA Net just. Google it.

No, Sprint will not be "aware". Don't take this as gospel. You never know. But, for the most part they expect people who own phones like ours to higher than normal data useage. That's why we buy the phones.

If they do catch you. I don't know . I suppose it could be considerable.

Not sure how you "avoid" the fee. I just feel that if your an occasional tether user, you'll be ok. But, on the other hand if you use your phone to download an entire season of your favorite show off some sharing site. They might get suspicious .
