If someone could be very kind, help me take the plunge by pointing out which threads would help me out the most. Also feel free to recommend kernels, ROMs, radios, etc for me to test out once I'm ready to go. I've already had my eye on the Super Battery Saver kernel thread.

Thanks in advance.
Just use unrevoked. It is simple and reliable. Plus its just as good as all those methods on xda. Before the evo I had tp2 unlocked and I still feel hesitant to root my phone manually. I have used unrevoked on all my evos and have never had any issues. Just follow the directions they recommend and you'll be fine. Main things to remember is to uninstall htc sync and install the drivers on windows.
