I'm rather hesitant about rooting...

I know that more often than not, rooting is extremely beneficial. I enabled linux access on my Pre easily, since I know a lot about the linux operating system. However, rooting and flash on the Evo looks a bit more involved and slightly further from linux base.

I bricked my Pre 3 times but always had a backup tool (webos doctor) which was dead simple to use in case I needed a rescue.

If someone could be very kind, help me take the plunge by pointing out which threads would help me out the most. Also feel free to recommend kernels, ROMs, radios, etc for me to test out once I'm ready to go. I've already had my eye on the Super Battery Saver kernel thread.

Thanks in advance.

Just use unrevoked. It is simple and reliable. Plus its just as good as all those methods on xda. Before the evo I had tp2 unlocked and I still feel hesitant to root my phone manually. I have used unrevoked on all my evos and have never had any issues. Just follow the directions they recommend and you'll be fine. Main things to remember is to uninstall htc sync and install the drivers on windows.

Re: I'm rather hesitant about rooting...

You'll need to figure out what HBOOT version you are on. Shut the phone off then hold the power + volume down at the same time until you get into the bootloader. From there, you should see what version you are on. To reboot the phone, volume up and down will change your selection and the power button will make your selection. Just highlight reboot and hit the power button.

More than likely you'll be using this tutorial if you want to root:

[ROOT][GUIDE] HBoot 2.02/2.10 SOFF - Don't Be a Hater Edition - Upd. 01.01.11 - xda-developers

Edit - Even though Unrevoked was mentioned, you should probably read up on it before using it. If you have a newer Evo, previously Unrevoked wouldn't work on it. Unrevoked has released a newer version, but from what i've read it has been hit or miss.

The tutorial I posted is a sure fire away to get your Evo rooted.

The new version of unrevoked has already been through beta testing and has released an official version that is guaranteed to work. I ran it on my phone and 2 of my friends evos. It worked flawlessly.

Re: I'm rather hesitant about rooting...

looks like I have a 2.10 hboot, I'm not nervous so much about rooting, I've done it to every device I've owned since my winmo days. Just want to be educated on the process this FIRST time with andro.

Re: I'm rather hesitant about rooting...

I got in before UnreVoked so I learned what was happening to my phon every step of the way. Having said that, UnRevoked it working for all versions now though Recovery is still a problem (but solvable).

This is a good forum with only a few a$$holes. That in and of itself is an asset. You get a little confused and there are alway those that will bring you back in.
