I don't even know why I think I should root. I'm very content with the stock evo, except for battery. With my tp2 I was flashing every other day. But that was simple an less risky than this crap for evo...
I recommend you update first. Only reason I had to go back was because I was rooted already and it wouldn't accept the ota update. Since you have never been rooted just run ota update and then use unrevoked.

About rooting, I thought I didn't need root also because the phone is a great phone already. But with root you can get free wifi tethering and use programs that improve your battery life like setcpu. Also you can do a full backup of your phone and be able to restore it identical to how you backed it up. Theres also all those cool custom roms that offer many different features like great battery life and lots of space. So rooting has more benefits than negatives.
