I think this issue stems from several variables.
If you go to Settings/Personal Tab/Today and then scroll down you will see a checkbox that says Today Timeout and a selection box to vary the time interval. Basically, if you have this checked after your device is idle/asleep for the selected time interval your device will unload all today items to save power. If you have a lot of emails, sms, mms, and several today items like CHT and Sense and other items that have to load each time when you wake up your device then sometimes it will take quite a while for everything to load. The solution is get rid of excess stuff and it won't bog down or crash. You could uncheck the today timeout but your battery life will suffer.
