But if you are going to do that, why use an arbitrary coordinate system when you could just have the phone recognize gestures that draw the actual letters? 8Pen makes you learn shapes that are sort of variations on the shape of a capital G. How is that easier than just drawing each letter.

But then we've tried and abandoned that sort of system already with the old Palm Pilots.
