That's a krazy plan! (Actually, it might be a cunning plan, but I don't really understand it.)
Okay, here's what I did: I went and talked to the dude at the Sprint store. He recommended that I buy the phone at Radio Shack, and then activate it (tomorrow) via the telephone. He said that it probably wouldn't be worth coming in to the store, since they're pretty clueless about the whole SERO thing there.
Fine. I figured I didn't need to wait any longer, and so I went and bought the Evo on my lunch hour. One less thing to do tomorrow. $499. Ouch. It's charging now. It seems very nice.
(I had no intention of signing up for a 24-month stretch, so this approach isn't costing me much more than I had originally planned.)
