You sure that's not 50KB (about 500kbit) you're seeing?

USB 1.1 should be faster then EVDO, so that's not it.... any chance you've put the phone somewhere where it gets a bad signal?

For me, speeds are always better tethered vs on the device, as the device is just being a dumb modem (not much work there) vs trying to render pages or otherwise process the bits.
