if your used to t9, you can just type the first few 'letters' of the persons name after pressing "PHONE" using the keypad .i.e. #2 for 'abc' #3 'def', etc...
but that just helps when trying to dial their number
EDIT if you use t9 to find them you can click on their 'contact' card to see it or press their picture to instantly call them
