I had this exact problem its a format issue. Edit one of your contacts in gmail and then type in that contacts phone number, (note all of the original info is in the notes section) then export it in Google format. Open the spreadsheet u just exported and note the location of the edited contacts number compared to the others. Now just copy and paste your unedited contacts into the proper column and save the spreadsheet (make sure u keep it in csv format.) Finally re-import this file to your gmail account and then to your phone.
Exact same thing I did and was done in 30 min once I figured out this way.
