I've never heard good things about the thick button keyboard so I've never even tried it. I am, however, using the "Better Android Keyboard" which I've found to work pretty well...for me better than the stock keyboard. I believe it is a buck or two to buy but remember if you don't like it you can always uninstall it within (30 days??) for a full refund.
