The TP2 you received may have been a replacement for whom ever the seller was. Replacements through Service and Repair(refurbs) do not come with the SIM chip. On the front of the replacement device it advises the person receiving the phone to contact Sprint. Or like you said try a SIM from where ever you are going. It may(should because the phone is SIM unlocked) or may not function. Good luck.
