The R-UIM cards are still in use by some carriers overseas. R-UIM cards are used to store basically everything a GSM SIM card does, phone books, MDN, ETC. As for using the slot for something else not very likely without a lot of modification. Just a note not all CDMA phones have these only certain batches that were intended for use overseas and by select carriers here in the states (Verizon).
