SMS through Manila seems to not slow down as much, that's the main difference. Also, the new sexy theme, etc.

Yep, 23504 and 23088 is basically identical. They are made from different "COM's" of Microsoft, so different teams of developers are making them. They still end up with basically identical stuff though! Maybe MS just does that to mess with us, who knows.
