It's not as straight forward as the visual voicemail that other carriers offer.
it is now. those instructions were for before they enabled the conditional codes. now you just do a *28###your###

I just use googlevoice and find the transcribed sms very handy. I rarely even actually listen to the message.
btw, google voice is open to everyone now (without a number), but they have a number for you v/m fwding from cell.
