To be blunt:
all gpsOne chips can potentially support Standalone mode, it not something unique to the msm7500.
This is far from new and has always been a part of the chip design.
The issue though is two-fold
- The device hardware needs an internal GPS antenna for it to work
- The carrier and/or OEM have to enable it via firmware
Previous devices on Sprint have not had the internal antenna (6700, 700wx) so could not do standalone though theoretically they could do regular aGPS via assisted servers and tower triangulation (like a Razr does). However, this feature was either blocked or not available on those devices.
The Mogul and Touch, however, both have internal GPS antennas allowing them to operate in standalone (theoretically). Currently though, this feature is not enabled and is blocked by Sprint/HTC.
As mentioned numerous times here on ppcgeeks, the Touch is set to receive a firmware upgrade Q1 2008 (along with the Mogul) to enable this feature.
