The images for portrait and landscape are each contained in 3 manila files. The 3 manila files contain a 512x512 image (the panorama). You have to use cfcgui to replace those 512x512 images if you want to change the background. When you change the background using manila, I believe it also changes an image inside of a manila file (but it's only 1 and different from the ones used for the panoramic mod).
