I know there are some smilies that are essentially a single character in the font used to display text messages. However, they are not standard ASCII characters. I believe they use Unicode. I found an option in Advanced Config to enable Unicode in text messages (it appears to be off by default). I haven't actually tested it w/ smilies yet, tho, so I'm not sure if that's what will enable it or not. Now, if you're wanting graphic smilies (with colors etc) that's a whole different ball game. You'd most likely have to have an add-on program that would look for the multi-character version and replace it w/ a graphic.
