In the phone options under time synchronization there's an option to automatically sync time. It's off by default.

When you have this option set, you don't change the timezone. Instead it simply updates the clock to the local time. This works reasonably well as long as you don't need to compare outlook calendars on the fly. It won't do the corrections for timezone when looking at an Exchange server.
