Is your Mode of Operation (Settings -> Personal -> Phone -> Services -> Mode of Operation selection -> Click "Get Settings") set to Hybrid?

I personally keep my MoD on 1X, since I text A LOT and text messages are sent and received in 1X. I get them much faster, and it saves battery life since it doesn't switch from EVDO to 1X.

EVDO is just required for fast internet use, from what I understand.
