Limited satellites with CF03

Is there a limit on the number of satellites you can use with CF03? I ask because since flashing I have never had more that 6, even while standing next to survey grade GPS reciever locked on to 9 American satellites. Not that it is a problem because 5 is enough for simple navigation.

No.

I normally get 4 to 9. Using CF03 & Adryn's 3.0 Vanilla ROM.

Re: Limited satellites with CF03

Scotty, it is probably because the gps receiver in the Omnia sucks. Ive been struggling for months to get even a single lock with it at home, and with the help of Quick GPs, and Gpsgate I was able to do a little better, but its still near impossible to get a lock in my house. My son just got a Ipod touch though (which presumably has the same gps chip as the Iphone), and it locks us in our house in an instant, every freaking time. I love my Omnia, but it is frustrating how bad the gps chip is on this phone compared to a lot of other ones

Re: Limited satellites with CF03

The ipod touch does *NOT* have a GPS chip in it. It uses WiFi and your IP address for triangulation. GPS receivers do not work well indoors, period, unless you have an antenna outside. The unit needs to make contact with the satellites orbiting earth - that's very hard to do inside a building, because your roof is essentially hiding the unit. GPS is pretty much useless inside a house anyway, unless you can't figure out where you are...

Re: Limited satellites with CF03

I usually get 6 everytime in less than 30 secs. I'm in So Cal though, North of LA, so that might be why.

Re: Limited satellites with CF03

Same here, my GPS is no good inside but I can get at least 4 but usually 5 or 6 sats outside, and it only takes a few seconds to a minute to lock on. It's working out quite well for me now.

But yes, as stated before, the GPS chipset in the Omnia is a lower-grade model, i.e. not the superior SiRFstar III that is used in many HTC phones and others which is better. Oh well, maybe Samsung will learn and put the SiRF on the OmniaII.

Wow, I had no idea. So if I take it on the road and there is no wifi it wont pick me up??? That sucks. As far as my being upset about it not working inside, the only reason that bugs me is because when I see another phone that does pick up inside within seconds (like my brother's storm sitting right next to mine), you know that it has a better gps chip. And the better the chip, the better results you will have in other outdoor places. That is why we see so many posts on here about people in certain areas not getting any gps lock. Like I said though, Ive gotten better results lately with the help of gpsgate and quickgps (that Adrynalyn has in his 2.0 rom)

Re: Limited satellites with CF03

The Storm doesn't get a lock inside either - BB Maps and VZ Navigator both use aGPS, so it's using cellular triangulation as well. Both of my brothers have the BB Storm.

Re: Limited satellites with CF03

Good to know, I hate hearing when other phones are better than ours.
