Don't have that problem on mine....how are you setting up your bluetooth network and what app are you using to share internet?

Re: Why is BLUETOOTH tether SOO SLOW

I'm using ICS on the phone, and the Mac bluetooth software that automatically detects the phone.

Re: Why is BLUETOOTH tether SOO SLOW

its just Bluetooth and as it was designed for low power short range wireless connections, it doesn't have that much of a bandwidth.
Version 1.2 is @ 1 Mb p/s
and 2.0 at 3 Mb p/s
Just to make sure you are aware, I am not saying MB I am saying Mb.
1 Mb is about .8 MB Someone correct me if I am wrong, its been 5 years since I have had to do these conversions...
I know when you work with 802.11b or g, something like 20% to 40% of the bandwidth is over head just to make the wireless connection function properly. Also everything bluetooth just 2.4 ghz just like 802.11b,g,n is and has the same problems. You have to look at both devices, and what version of bluetooth they are. ver 1.2 is faster then 1.0 or 1.1 and uses less power. If one bluetooth is older ver then is will obviously be that slow. And just because they say it can go 1Mb does not mean it ever will. Nature of wireless. Also, your microwave runs on 2.4 ghz you know what that does to your food. Now put your bluetooth back in your ear... lol
I guess I am saying I have no idea why its that slow, I just wouldn't expect it to be faster then that. I teather my phone with bluetooth all the time. When I test it out on a speed test site, it tells me I get 120Kbs download, and like 60Kbs up. So I bet in real life I would get around 60Kbs on normal use.

Re: Why is BLUETOOTH tether SOO SLOW

Not so. Most people, even with the older bluetooth models get at least 400-500kbits/sec. My bluetooth on the laptop is 2.0 + EDR. still my max DL speeds are ~50kbits/s or ~7kbytes per second! That is too slow and I can't figure out why!

That speed they get is good for a 1 Mb connection
You are correct though. What I said was misleading. I forgot to mention I don't have working REV A where I am at. Only 1x. My mind went faster then I can type. I thought I said that just before I said ...I don't know why...
The easiest thing I can say it look for updated drivers for your computer bluetooth, and if you don't have an official ROM on your phone, that may also be the problem.
Those are the two first things I would look at...

.... and 802.11 wireless and a lot of cordless phones too. I always turn off my 802.11g wireless on my notebook before tethering with bluetooth.

Just out of curiosity I ran a speedtest.net with my bluetooth tether. Not too bad for one bar on the phone. I have a 2.0 BT adapter.

I turned the wireless back on but disconnected from my wireless network and retested. Never did better than this... FWIW

It sure sounds like packet errors to me. In other words, lots more data is probably transferring but it's all scrambled up. I'd suggest that you hang up your 2.4Ghz cordless phone and get out of the microwave!

Seriously though, there is a neat little free utility called TCP Optimizer that I've used many times to troubleshoot problems like yours.

Re: Why is BLUETOOTH tether SOO SLOW

Not only is it uber slow, it disconnects withinn 3-5 mins. I did run the "fullproof" ICS cab with no effect. this is wierd. I may try another ROM.
